The Commercialisation Sprint is for Massey University researchers and postgraduate students who believe their work could have commercial or social impact, but aren't sure where to start. No business experience required.

All participants receive mentoring, peer support and access to Massey's network of industry and IP professionals.

What you'll get from the programme

Over six weeks, you'll work through a structured programme that takes you from "I think this could be something" to a clear, evidence-based decision on your best path to market. Each week combines a hands-on workshop, practical exercises and assignments that build toward a complete business model for your research.

By the end of the programme, you'll have:

  • A validated understanding of your research's commercial value

  • Real feedback from potential customers and end-users

  • A working knowledge of intellectual property strategy

  • A completed business model

  • A clear rationale for your chosen commercialisation pathway, whether that's licensing, partnering, spinning out, publishing or deciding to stop

Register Interest

  • Postgraduate students and researchers at Massey University who have research, a thesis project or an invention with potential real-world application. You don't need any business background. Teams and individuals are both welcome.

  • One workshop per week plus exercises and assignments. Expect around 2 to 4 hours per week over the 5-week programme.

  • No. While we encourage you to work on your own research or thesis project, it's not a requirement. We can provide research projects for you to work with, or you can team up with a peer and collaborate on theirs. The programme is just as valuable as a learning experience regardless of whose research you're commercialising.

  • Yes. The programme respects the confidentiality of all participant research. Materials will not be shared outside the programme without your consent.
